Home of Israel’s National Treasures

Designed by renowned architect Moshe Safdie, the Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein National Campus for the Archaeology of the Land of Israel will serve as the headquarters of the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA). The campus will bring together objects from the Archaeological State Treasures and the National Archaeological Library and Archives, as well as open the National Archaeological Conservation and Restoration Laboratories to the public for the first time. The National Campus will provide an unprecedented look at how millions of artifacts from myriad cultures and eras of history are unearthed, restored and displayed.

What’s Inside

The Schottenstein National Campus includes two primary buildings, the Dan David Archaeology Building, and the Building for the Study of Israel’s Heritage. These house a variety of facilities including research rooms, archaeological gardens, exhibition areas, and storage units for Israel’s National Treasures. About two million archaeological artifacts will be housed in the National Campus, including over 20,000 Dead Sea Scroll fragments. The campus will also contain new conservation labs for IAA staff. For the first time, these labs will be open to public viewing allowing visitors to watch IAA conservators as they restore and preserve ancient objects.

About the Architect

Moshe Safdie’s exemplary work includes the design of Yad Vashem, the impressive Terminal 3 of Ben Gurrion Airport, the city of Modi'in, the Yitzhak Rabin Center in Tel Aviv, and the Mamila complex in Jerusalem. He also designed the marina in Singapore and the municipal library in Vancouver, along with numerous other overseas projects. In 2019, Safdie received the Wolf Prize for Architecture in recognition of his significant contribution to architecture within Israel and worldwide. The prize is one of Israel’s most prestigious international awards.

Safdie designed the IAA’s future headquarters, the Jay and Jeanie Schottenstien National Campus for the Archaeology of Israel. In Safdie’s words, the Campus “is a contemporary building, yet it tries to relate to the Heritage of Jerusalem.” The IAA is honored to oversee the construction of one of Safdie’s architectural masterpieces.
