Jerusalem Conference: "New Studies in the Archaeology of Jerusalem and its Region"


Dear honored friends,

It is our pleasure to invite you on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority to participate in our twelfth conference on “New Studies in the Archaeology of Jerusalem and its Region”, which will take place in Jerusalem, on the evening of October 10thand the day of October 11th, 2018.

The conference, which has been the center stage for presentations on the current research being conducted in Jerusalem and its vicinity, is a collaborative effort between the Israel Antiquities Authority, Tel Aviv University, and the Hebrew University. 

For more than a decade, the conference has aimed at serving as a platform for the most current research being conducted in and around Jerusalem. The joint efforts of the three organizing bodies create discussion amongst the leading scholars in the field of ancient Jerusalem. The lectures are published in a volume presenting the conference proceedings, making this scientific publication one of the leading sources for the study ancient Jerusalem. 

On the evening of October 10th, a special event will be held at the Israel Museum, where a newly found inscription mentioning YERUSHALIM will be presented.

The scientific conference itself will be held on October 11that the Hebrew University campus on Mount Scopus. The lectures will include the presentation of recent archaeological data, the implementation of new scientific approaches in the fieldwork being conducted, and interpretation of the new data accumulated. The lectures will mostly be presented by local scholars (in Hebrew). This year’s sessions will focus on Art and Ideology in Jerusalem, burials and burial customs, the rural settlement and its relationship to the urban entities, and new insights on Aelia Capitolina. In addition, a special session will be held, exposing a new and exciting find just discovered in recent IAA excavations. 

While you are here, we would be happy to show you some of the current excavations in Jerusalem and its Region. We are looking forward to seeing you in Jerusalem.
